♦ One hundred years of education in the City of Brainerd starts with one teacher in a one-room school trying to teach children of all ages to read and "figure."

 | Bricks Replace Handhewn Logs
♦ One hundred years of progress in the Brainerd Public Elementary schools have been 100 years of growth and development from the two one-room school houses of handhewn logs to the present seven modern, seven to 20 classroom, brick buildings.

♦ In the year when Bye & Peterson advertised suits for "college and high school chaps" at $15 and $25 . . . when D. M. Clark & Co. dealt in furniture, hardware, plumbing and heating and also directed funerals when Johnson's Pharmacy was already the Rexall store when Skauge Drug Co. sold "Skauge's Never-Cough" when the George F. Murphy Co. was a ready-to-wear shop. . .when Marie Canan Studio and Opsahl's Photographs were taking the graduates' pictures. . .and when H. W. Linnemann had a men's clothing store at 612 Front Street.

People Voted To Establish High School

 | Jr. High Education Inaugurated in 1935
♦ C. B. Blackford, first principal of the Franklin Junior High school, is the best qualified person to tell about the establishment of that school in Brainerd.

Two Expansions Mark Vocational School Story
♦ The first classes in Brainerd's Area Vocational-Technical school were held in the fall of 1964. Now, only seven years later, that school is hoping to expand its facilities double size for the second time since its recent origin.

 | Catholic Education in Brainerd Began in 1885
♦ The first Catholic school in Brainerd was a six-room building, formerly used as a public school, operated by six Benedictine Sisters in 1885. St. Mary's school operated only two years.
