Pillsbury State Forest Was First in Minnesota
♦  Pillsbury State Forest, ten miles northeast of Brainerd, made history by being a forest of "firsts." It was the first state forest in Minnesota and contained the first state nursery.

No Need Necessary in Early Stocking
♦  When lakes were first stocked with walleyes, there was little concern as to what type of lake was stocked and little or no information as to the actual need for stocking, said Hjalmar Swenson, state fisheries supervisor.

Fire of 1895 Set Stage for Forestry Many Changes Made Over Years
♦  In 1894, Minnesota's most disastrous forest fire killed over 400 persons at Hinckley and set the stage for action by the Legislature which in 1895 unofficially began the Minnesota Forest Service.

Walleye Eggs Collected After 1916 Experience Teaches Fish Biologists
♦  The nucleus of fisheries management had its start in Minnesota in the 1880's with the first walleye eggs being taken by trapping the spawning fish at Fond du Lac in 1886.

How Some Lakes Received Names
♦  White Fish Lake "Ga-atk- kumegokag, the place of white fish," an aboriginal name.
